a > 1; the sequence {an} is increasing. Suppose it is bounded above; then as in Case 1, it converges to a limit l satisfying l = a.l. This contradiction shows the sequence is not bounded above. Since the sequence is monotone, it must tend to infinity (as described in 3.9).
